About us and what we do

The Southern Cross Association (FTC) Inc. (SCA), formed in March 1998, is run entirely by volunteers who raise funds for children’s charities.

Unlike some charity organisations, SCA only recoups administration costs from monies raised, and the remainder goes directly to Children's Charities.

Aall those involved with SCA do so in their own time, no wages are paid and the Association receives no Government funding.

Currently, SCA has members Australia wide, with some International members also. Some members do not own or even ride a motorbike. However, all are valuable members.

Membership is only $20 for new memberships and then $10.00 per year with fees due on 1st February each year. All new members receive a Badge and Membership card.

Southern Cross Annual 5 Day Poker Run

The main fundraising event for the year is the Southern Cross Annual 5 Day Poker Run, which commences on the first Monday of September every year. The Poker Run covers nearly 3,000km during the week, and is believed to be the longest in Australia.

Each year the Poker Run travels throughout regional Queensland, camping at showgrounds and sporting grounds each night. All evening and morning meals, along with camping facilities, are organised for the 5 days. All of this is included in your registration. (see Poker Run form for different classes and costs)

The Southern Cross Annual 5 Day Poker Run raises funds and awareness for the Pyjama Foundation.

The first poker run was held in 1998 with approx 45 people, raising $500, with recent participant numbers increasing to approximately 400. The 2022 Poker Run raised around $62,500.00

The Poker Run participants can feel safe with the knowledge that Overlanders Motorcycle Event Support is there to assist with breakdowns.

Other Activities

SCA Townsville Sub Committee has provisions for functions and meetings at 'The Shed' located in Hermit Park. (please click here for who to contact) They also organise regular rides and overnight camping trips which are fully catered for and beverages available for purchase.

Pyjama Foundation

The Pyjama Foundation was created to provide children in care a world of unlimited opportunity, to create positive relationships, and to instill a love for learning.

Volunteer ‘Pyjama Angel’ mentors provide one-on-one support to children in care by visiting them once a week to empower them with learning, life skills and confidence to reach their full potential.

If you have an hour a week, and meet our eligibility criteria, please sign up to become a Pyjama Angel today.

There are more than 800 foster children in our waitlist, desperately waiting for the arrival of their own special Pyjama Angel.

Previous Contributions

Previously Southern Cross Association had been helping children with Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus since 1998 and raised over $700 000 to help give children with Spina Bifida the therapy and other support they needed.

SBHQ unfortunately closed it's doors in 2022.
